Matt Russell, son of the (then) current Exeter City chairman John Russell, signed as a professional with the Grecians in 2002 but did not appear for the first-team. He had appeared in the Football League for Scarborough, Doncaster Rovers and Halifax Town.
He had played 44 times in the Football League for Scarborough, when his father had been chair and owner of the Yorkshire club, before making five league appearances on loan at Doncaster Rovers and another seven in the colours of Halifax Town before returning to the now-relegated Scarborough.
Arriving at Exeter City in the autumn of 2002, he played in a friendly at Clyst Rovers and featured in a number of games for the reserves without being selected for the first-team.
