Matt Russell, born in Dewsbury, signed as a professional in 2002, for Exeter City.
He was the son of the chairman, and played in the reserves making his debut in a friendly against Clyst Rovers on the 4th September 2002.

He had previously played for Scarborough, Doncaster and Halifax Town, as a defender, making over 50 apperances and scoring 3 goals in league football.
