Stephen Kent, from Street in Somerset, played for Yeovil's age group teams when at school. Offered traineeships at both Yeovil and Exeter City, he chose to come to St James' Park. 

Starting his traineeship in 1998, he remained at the club until 2000 before winning a scholarship to Hofstra University on Long Island, New York.
