Biographical Text
Steve Finney, most recently at Leyton Orient but better-known for his time at Swindon Town, was briefly on trial with Exeter City ahead of the 1999/2000 campaign. Without an offer from the Grecians, he later made a final thirteen appearances in the Football League with Chester City.
Starting his career as an apprentice with Preston North End, he made a handful of first-team appearances before a surprise move to Manchester City. Not playing for the first-team during his time at Maine Road, he enjoyed better fortune at Swindon Town between 1995 and 1998 when he netted 18 times in 73 league games.
Having also played for Cambridge United on loan, he spent most of the 1998/99 season with Carlisle United before playing a handful of games for Leyton Orient towards the end of the campaign. Out of contract that summer, he appeared for the Grecians in pre-season games against Brechin and Portsmouth and - although he appeared in the pre-season team picture - no deal was agreed and he was soon playing non-league football with Barrow
Briefly returning to the Football league with the soon-to-be-relegated Chester City, he also had a spell with Altrincham.
Later living in the Lake District and working in car sales and business development, Steve Finney died in February 2002 at the age of forty-eight.
