Biographical Text
Selwyn Rice from Chulmleigh joined Exeter City as an amateur in 1964 before turning professional. Never appearing for City's first-team, he played for Wimbledon in the years before the club's election to the Football League in 1977.
Signing for the Grecians as a 16-year-old amateur, he quickly made his debut for City's reserves in the Western League against Barnstaple in March 1965. Accepting a professional deal in 1965/66 he bided his time whilst still young by playing twenty reserve games but, with manger Ellis Stuttard departing at the end of the season, the teenaged Selwyn was soon on his way to Gloucester City for four seasons before a brief stay at Weymouth.
Then in 1971 Selwyn, often described as a 'tough-tackling inside forward', joined a Wimbledon side that was to become a powerforce in non-league football during the 1970s. Staying at the club for six seasons, but rarely featuring during the club's momentous 1976/77 campaign, his end-of-season testimonial in April 1977 was the club's final game before election to the Football League. He then left Plough Lane to play for Cheltenham Town, Cinderford Town, Dulwich Hamlet, Gloucester City and Barnstaple Town.
.
A regular attender at St James' Park over the years, he was present at a reunion of former players in 2019.
