From Ludgvan in Cornwall, he was an Exeter City trainee between 1993 and 1995 who played for the club's youth and reaerve teams and for the 'A' side in the Devon and Exeter League before it folded.

He later played for Ludgvan (where he was also assistant manager) and Penzance
