Biographical Text

Arthur Welsby played for Exeter City between 1932 and 1934. He joined the club from Sunderland and later played for Stockport County. He was a member of the team that finished as runners up in Division Three (South) in 1932/33.

Playing local football in Lancashire for Ashton St Mary’s, he got his Football League chance with Wigan Borough in 1923 where he was a big success staying until the end of the 1930/31 season making 218 league appearances and scoring 31 goals. He moved to Sunderland in the summer of 1931, but was to only feature 3 times scoring once.

Exeter City was Arthur's next port of call in the summer of 1932 and he made a goalscoring debut in a 2-0 home win over Bristol City in August 1932. Playing 27 times (5 goals) for the highly-successful side which finished runners-up in Division Three (South) in 1932/33, he added just a dozen league appearances (3 goals) in 1933/34 as he struggled to displace John Scott from the outside-right position.

Leaving St James' Park in 1934, he signed for Stockport County before moving on to Southport and later Cardiff City. Seeing out his playing career with Mossley, Arthur Welsby died in the Wigan area on 24 April 1980.
