Biographical Text

Playing local football in Lancashire for Ashton St Mary’s, Welsby got his Football League chance with Wigan Borough in 1923, and he was a big success for them, staying until the end of the 1930-31 season making 218 league appearances and scoring 31 goals.

He moved to Sunderland in the summer of 1931, but was to only feature 3 times in their league side, scoring once.

Exeter City was his next port of call in the summer of 1932 and he made his debut for them in a 2-0 home win over Bristol City in August 1932, scoring one of the goals.

Welsby remained at St James’ Park for two seasons, whereupon he signed for Stockport County, playing 4 league matches and scoring 2 goals.

He moved to Southport in the summer of 1935 and played in their Third Division North side, scoring one goal in 21 starts.

He was at Cardiff City for the 1936-37 season, which was to be his last Football League club, but he only played 3 games for them.

Welsby left Cardiff to sign for Mossley.

Arthur died on the 24th of April 1980.
