Hailing from Plymouth, Shane played for Exeter City's youth and reserve teams in the early 1990s. After leaving the club he continued to play in Westcountry non-league football for a dozen or so years most notably for Bideford. 

Appearing for the under-16s in 1989/90, he remained with the club until 1992 when he embarked on a non-league career that saw him play for teams such as Exmouth, Elmore, Liskeard and Millbrook.

Best-known for his time at Bideford where he played around 170 games, he turned out against Exeter City in the Devon St Luke's Bowl final in 2004.
