Matthew played for the youth team in 1986/87. He was midfielder and striker, who had been an apprentice with Luton.
He made his debut against Topsham Town on the 30th of August 1986 for Exeter City in the Devon and Exeter Premier League.

He played against Poole in the FAYC in 1986/87.
