Ben Abbey appeared for Exeter City in an end-of-season friendly against Newcastle United in May 2001. He had played in the Football League for Oxford United and Southend United.

Starting in West London with Osterley, he had spells with Maidenhead Utd and Crawley Town (in the Southern League) before a £30,000 transfer to Oxford United where he made ten league appearances.

Having also turned out for Aldershot Town on loan, he spent the 2000/01 season with Southend United where he scored nine league and cup goals before his release in May 2001. With City taking advantage of an end-of-season game against Newcastle to give him a trial, he was briefly at St James' Park later that month although nothing came of his trip to Devon. 

Not again appearing in the Football League he moved on to Stevenage Borough, Woking, Macclesfield Town (where he didn't play in the first-team), Gravesend & Northfleet, Hertford Town, St Albans City, Northwood, Farnborough Town, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Metropolitan Police and Tooting & Mitcham Utd.

Away from playing he built a career in finance and sports management.
