Played for Exeter City under-18s in the first season of the FA Youth Cup in 1952/53 when the Grecians beat Pinewood Youth  Swindon (with Ray scoring twice) and lost to Bristol Rovers.

Also appeared for City's Exeter and District League side in 1952/53 and for the reserves in the Southern League in 1953/54.
