Arthur Stenner had appeared in the Football League for Plymouth Argyle and Norwich City when he had a brief spell with Exeter City in the mid-1950s. Not making the first-team, he moved on to Oldham Athletic and then back to Yeovil Town where he had started his career.  

He first played for Yeovil in 1951 before leaving to do National Service. After his demob he signed for Bristol City in August 1954 but, without playing for the first-team, switched to Plymouth Argyle a year later where he had nine league outings scoring once. Subsequently signing for Norwich he made six league appearances in 1955/56 before arriving at St James' Park towards the end of 1956.

Now aged twenty-two, and with time running out to establish himself as a professional, Arthur quickly made his debut for the reserves in the Southern League but couldn't break through into the first-team and left the club within a few weeks to play for Taunton Town. Surprisingly signing for Oldham Athletic in April 1957, he made three appearances in Division Three (North) at the end of the 1956/57 campaign before returning home to rejoin Yeovil Town. 

Running a storage and removals firm in the Somerset town, he died in March 2010. He also played for Chard Town.
