Craig Watkins, signed from Sutton United, made a goalscoring debut for Exeter City in 2005 but was only ever used as a substitute in his handful of league appearances. He soon returned to the London area and played non-league football for many years before moving into coaching.
Craig was top scorer for Epsom & Ewell in 2003/04 prior to joining Sutton United for whom he featured prominently during the following season. His performances caught the eye of Exeter City with the nineteen-year-old Craig arriving at St James' Park on a one-year deal in August 2005.
Coming on as a second-half substitute for his debut, Craig scored within ten minutes in the 2-1 win at Accrington Stanley on 27 August 2005. Subsequently he made another four appearances from the bench before being handed his only start for the Grecians in a Football League Trophy tie at MK Dons on 18 October.
This proved to be Craig’s final Exeter appearance and he was soon back at Sutton on loan and, following similar stints at Lewes and Staines Town, was released by City in March 2006. Craig then joined Havant & Waterlooville only to re-sign for Sutton in July 2007 before returning to Havant where he remained until 2009/10. Thereafter Craig appeared for Woking, Hayes & Yeading and Metropolitan Police before another stint at Sutton United. After two seasons at Gander Goose Lane, Craig was at Tooting & Mitcham in 2014/15.
By this time Craig had become a coach working for various club academies and private coaching schools as well as running his own set-up for a while. As of 2023 he was head of academy player care with AFC Wimbledon.
