1909 Simms

Simms was a military man from Hampshire who, when stationed at Topsham Barracks, appeared for Exeter City reserves in the Plymouth and District League during 1909/10. An amateur, he not appear for the first-team in the Southern League.

He had previously played for Isle of Wight club Ryde and the Hampshire county team. Joining the Hampshire Regiment, he became a Lieutenant and played at half-back for the regiment's 1st Battalion.  

Stationed at Topsham Barracks, he is known to have played for City's reserves at centre-half in the friendly at Torquay on 13 October 1909 when he scored in a 11-2 win. Prior to that he also scored in league matches against Babbacombe and the Royal Garrison Artillery.

During the Great War he was commissioned from the ranks in March 1915 and wounded in action at the Battle of Loos.
