Stationed locally with the Royal Air Force, Warren was a guest player for Exeter City in 1945-46.

He made his debut in a 4-1 win (and scored) at Swindon Town in August 1945, one of two matches that he played for the Grecians.

Charles had been a schoolboy international and was signed by the Grecians at the same time as Stan Challis.
