Ciaran played in the Devon and Exeter Youth League and the South West Counties Youth League for Exeter in the 1998/99 season. He had been invited to trials at Exeter as a 15 year old from Dublin in 1998. 

He was not offered a long term contract, because the club did not have the funds, so he returned to Dublin in May 1999.
