Winter played for St Sidwell's United in local football before the club became Exeter City in 1904.

Although records do not survive for every game, there is reference to him scoring twice against Newton Abbot GWR students on 12 September 1903.

Scoring several times thereafter, he appears to have netted six times in five games during autumn 1903 at the start of St Sidwell’s third and final season.
