Former Colchester United and Wrexham player Steve Wright spent the 1985/86 pre-season with Exeter City before later playing for Torquay United and Crewe Alexandra. 

A central defender, he made his league debut for Colchester United,  his local club, in 1977 and appeared in 117 league games before switching to Wrexham where he added another 76 league outings to his tally.

Released from the Racecourse Ground in May 1985, he found himself without a club and arrived at St James’ Park in mid-July 1985. Not finding much joy with the Grecians, he headed down the A380 and joined a rather chaotic Torquay United for the 1985/86 campaign when he made thirty-three league appearances. 

He then enjoyed two productive seasons with Crewe Alexandra before seeing out his career with Rhyl, Chelmsford City and Wisbech Town.
