Sam Small, a teenager who had played for the Welsh FE colleges' representative team, was on trial with Exeter City during the summer of 2004 having reportedly been tracked by manager Eammon Dolan for some time.

A player of the same name and age was to have a lengthy career in South Wales semi-professional football notably with Cwmbran Town, Lllanelli (for whom he appeared in European football), Afan Lido and Ton Pentre.
