Charlie was a youth player at Exeter in 2000/01 and with the U-16's developement squad at the Centre of Excellence in 2002/03. Charlie was from Taunton, and later played for them.

In November 2007, the Somerset County Gazette reported the following 

“TAUNTON Town look set to keep vice-captain Charlie Welch despite an approach from Bridgwater Town.

The former Yeovil Town and Clevedon Town left-sided player has not yet spoken to Taunton's British Gas Business League rivals but manager Gary Domone is confident he will stay.”
