Rob, from Fareham and previously on Bournemouth's books, had already appeared for the under-17s before playing for the reserves against Bournemouth in the Football Combination in April 1995. 

He later won a scholarship to Judson University in Illinois and, continuing to live in the state after graduating, worked as a part-time youth football coach.
