Biographical Text

Stan Charlton, son of the 1920s Exeter City player of the same name, spent a period with the Grecians in the early 1950s. Not making a first team appearance, he later played over 450 games in the Football League for Arsenal and Leyton Orient.

Born in Exeter, shortly after his father's transfer to Crystal Palace, Stan junior was based at Woolwich Barracks when he made his debut for Exeter City Reserves in the Southern League against Tonbridge in March 1951 alongside fellow debutant Keith Harvey (who was to play 483 league games for City).

Still at the club early in 1951/52, Stan found it easier to play senior amateur football with Bromley with whom he soon won four England amateur caps together with selection for the 1952 Great Britain Olympic team. Subsequently joining the professional ranks with Leyton Orient in July 1952, he was a virtual ever-present before moving to Arsenal with Vic Groves in a joint transfer valued at £30,000 in October 1955.

Playing 99 league games for the Gunners, he returned to Brisbane Road in December 1958 and captained the side in the clun's solitary season in the top-flight in 1961/62. Totalling 367 league games for the East London club over his two spells, he replaced Frank O'Farrell as Weymouth manager in 1965 and spent seven years in the post before beoming club secretary.

Settling in Dorset, he died in Dorchester in December 2012 aged eighty-three.
