Gerald Ware played a the practice game at the start of the 1953/54 on the 12th August 1953. "City are to include 20 year old Gerald Ware from Taunton in their second practice match tomorrow. He has played for Newport County Reserves" 
He played on trial in a Southern League match at Tonbridge October 10th 1953. A 6ft 3in Centre-half, He “towered over the Tonbridge attackers”.

In the Autumn of 1956 Gerald was playing for Glastonbury where "The home team included G. Ware, a half back who has been on Exeter City's books as an amateur and is now living in the Bridgwater district. He was at centre-half in the first half and later switched to right half where he displayed many clever touches and created numerous openings for the forwards."
