Ian was born in Dursley on the 13 January 1939.

He signed for Bristol Rovers in August 1960, from Stonehouse. He had also been at Bristol City, but had not played for their first team.

Ian signed for Exeter City from Bristol Rovers in December 1960, he had played twice for Bristol in goal at the start of the season.

He played 4 games for City reserves in the Western League in 1960/61.

In October 1962 he signed for Bath City and played 79 times for them, after three seasons he left Twerton Park and joined Weston-Super-Mare and finally returned to play for Stonehouse.
