Biographical Text
George Green arrived from Bradford (Park Avenue) on a month’s trial in the summer of 1938 and soon left for Yeovil and Petters United without playing much football. He resumed his playing career after the war with Huddersfield Town and Reading.
Originally playing for Northowram, a village near Halifax, he joined the ground staff at Bradford City as a sixteen-year-old before moving to Bradford (Park Avenue) in 1935/36 where he made just two league appearances.
Arriving at St James’ Park on an initial month’s trial in August 1938 at the age of twenty-three, the inside-left soon suffered an ankle injury and made little progress before signing for Yeovil and Petters United in October 1938.
George was a guest player for Aberdeen during the war and, resuming his professional career afterwards, had nine league outings (scoring once) for Huddersfield Town and another forty-four (six goals) for Reading in the seasons leading up to 1949.
