John Bluck, son of George Bluck once with West Bromwich Albion, had just moved to the area when he made his debut as an amateur for Exeter City reserves in 1928. He did not appear for the first-team.

Recently moved from Ludlow in Shropshire with his family, the teenaged John was playing for Kenton United when he joined City as an amateur.

"I have heard glowing accounts of the play at Chagford last Saturday of Joh Bluck, the Kenton United outside-right, who signed amateur forms for Exeter City three weeks ago. A son of the old West Bromwich Albion professional, Bluck as- sisted Shropshire County last season, and his work has now brought him to the South-West. Strongly builť, and showing much natural football ability, he did pretty much as he liked against the Copplestone and District League opposition, so the City decided to try him out in the more strenuous Southern League competition, and he was chosen to assist Exeter City Reserves again to-day in their home match with Bristol Rovers Res."

Having previously won representative honours with the Shropshire county team, he first appeared for the reserves in the Southern League in November 1928 when he played alongside future Arsenal and England star Cliff Bastin.  

Making a number of other appearances in the Southern and Western league that season, he later moved into local football with Dawlish and featured for the Exeter and District League XI against City on several occasions.
