Biographical Text
Joe Ince was a goalkeeper from Tyneside who played for Exeter City’s reserves in 1932/33 without making the first-team. Later appeared in the Football League for Darlington and Gateshead.
Hailing from Byker, to the east of Newcastle city centre, he had enjoyed a junior career with Wellbeck Athletic and St Peters Albion. Given a chance by Exeter City in the summer of 1932, he made regular reserve team appearances in the Southern and Western league but his path to progress was blocked by the continued presence of Arthur Davies in the first-team goal.
Returning to the North East, Joe continued his professional career with both Darlington and Gateshead for whom he made a combined total of fifty-one league appearances between 1933 and 1935..
