Biographical Text
Bert Burden, originally from Oxford, played for Exeter City reserves in the 1920s and later became a tobacconist in the city centre. He was also well-known locally as a golfer and cricketer before his early death in 1945.
Bert Burden - recorded in contemporary match reports as 'Burdon', on his birth certificate as 'Herbert' and 'Bertram' at the time of his death - was born in Oxford and moved to Exeter just after the Great War when in his early twenties.
A fast bowler for Exeter CC, and later a notable local golfer, he was a full-back with Heavitree when he joined Exeter City as an amateur at the start of the 1924/25 campaign. First seen in the public practice game on 16 August 1924, he continued to feature for the reserves in both the Southern League and the Western League during the 1924/25 and 1925/26 seasons.
Subsequently continuing his football career with Friernhay, Bert was a tobacconist and newsagent in Queen Street, Exeter living in nearby Haldon Road when he died aged forty-nine in August 1945.
