W. Down was an amateur at the University College of the South-West who played for City, as a left-half in a Western League fixture on the 16/1/1926 against Torquay United.

He played as an amateur against Weymouth, away in the Southern League on the 25th of September 1926. And soon after as a right-half against Torquay in the Western League.
