Biographical Text
George Stanbury was a goalkeeper who played for Exeter City reserves in the 1926/27 season. Although he did not appear for City’s first-team he did play for Plymouth Argyle in the Football League.
Plymothian George had played for Plymouth St Thomas and Torpoint together with representing Devon in inter-county football before appearing for Exeter City Reserves in the Southern and Western leagues in the second half of the 1926/27 season.
Although City were undergoing a change in goalscoring personnel with Harry Bailey’s departure to Brentford, George wasn’t offered professional terms and the 21-year-old signed for Plymouth Argyle where, usually as second choice behind Fred Craig, he made 33 league appearances up until April 1932.
He then moved on to Gillingham and Crystal Palace making a single league appearance for each club.
George died in Plymouth in 1957.
