Matt Carmichael had most notably appeared in the Football League for Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United when he arrived at Exeter City for a pre-season trial in 1996.
Born in Singapore to a military family, his football career started on Salisbury Plain with Durrington whilst he was a PT instructor with the Royal Artillery. Moves up the ladder followed to Salisbury City and Basingstoke Town and he eventually turned professional with Lincoln City in 1989 where he played 133 league games scoring 18 goals.
He then moved to Scunthorpe United (20 goals from 62 league matches before a short-lived move to Preston North End in March 1995 for whom he made just ten league appearances. Subsequently turning out for Mansfield, Doncaster and Darlington during the 1995/96 season, he found himself without a club in July 1996 when he reported for pre-season training with Exeter City.
Making an appearance for the Grecians against Manchester City, his stay at St James’ Park was brief and his career in the Football League was effectively over.
Thereafter he played in Finland with TPS Turku, and living in the Lincoln area, appeared in non-league football for Aylesbury United, Ilkeston Town, Stamford, Boston United, Grantham Town and Wisbech Town.
