England Call Up For City Youngster
"Exeter College student, Josh Concanen, 17, was recently selected for the England Colleges football team. He was a a member of Exeter City's under-18 side last season. Now Josh hopes to complete his studies, a BTEC National Diploma in Performance and Excellence at Exeter College, while training at the Men's Football Development Centre at the college, and become a professional footballer.
"I have played football since I could walk," he said. "I was immediately hooked and haven't looked back. My dad taught me how to play in our back garden and helped me improve over the years." Josh enjoys a range of sports, including tennis, cricket and pool, but football is his favourite. "I feel relaxed when I am playing football. Out on the field I feel both free and fuelled with adrenalin, it is a great release for pent-up energy."
Josh, of Kingkerswell, joined the Exeter City Academy when he was 12 and added: "It gave a priceless introduction to the world of football, he said. "Now, with both Exeter College and the academy, I train three times a week and try to keep myself fit and healthy.
"There is one lesson we have at college where we watch professionals and try to learn and understand their technique." He said: "I would like to be a professional footballer one day, ideally for Exeter City as they have supported me through so much training. But it is important to get an education to fall back on. You never know what could happen in the future. "You have to be prepared to put enough hours of training and practice in to get yourself fit enough and to improve in ability. But it's a the hest feeling to win "
Josh moved to Tiverton in the summer of 2011 and spent the first half season playing with Tiverton’s reserve side.
"Within a month of playing for the first team at Ladysmead Josh was a regular starter for the senior side, missing just two of the final twenty-six games of 2011/12 season, and in the following campaign he was the last outfield player to have played every minute of every game." He played 108 games scoring 6 goals at Tiverton I all competitions.
In the summer of 2014 Josh relocated to his native Alderney.
