Frank Koenen played for Exeter City against Bridgwater, at Cullompton on the 10th of November 1981, whilst on a short term trial from Newcastle United.
He was born in Nijmegen in the Netherlands on Nov 4th 1961, and was signed by Newcastle from NEC Nijmegen in July 1980, for £80 000 and played 13 games, scoring once for the St James's Park Club before joining Exeter on trial. The following was a report from the Sunday Independent
"So Frans goes Dutch for an Exeter trial
Former Dutch under - 21 international Frans Koenen begins a fort night's trial with Exeter City this week. He arrives from Holland today after volunteering to pay his own travelling ex penses to the West Country. Midfielder Koenen has made one previous attempt to break into English League football when he figured in an £80,000 move from Dutch club Necnijmegen to New castle United. He made 12 appearances for the Magpies last season but wasn't offered a fresh contract in July and returned to Holland. He comes to Exeter on a recommendation from a City scout who saw him play in the North East and Exeter manager Brian Godfrey plans to give him as many reserve team games as possible"
After leaving Exeter he returned to the Netherlands and signed for De Treffers and then joined Belgian Club KFC Diest, and in 1984 joined AVC Vitesse in the Netherlands and after two seasons joined De Treffers again. Two years later, in 1988 he joined GVVV Veenendaal. By 1991 he had retired from playing and went into coaching and football management.
