A. Whittle was an amateur, who turned down a trial at Bradford Park Avenue preferring to sign for Exeter City.

He was a defender who made his debut against Lovell's Athletic in a Southern League match on the 2nd of March 1950. 

Apart from playing football he was a musician, who played in the Black Watch Band.
