1964 Hurst, John
Biographical Text
John Hurst, son of pre-war Grecians player Stan Hurst, was a regular in Exeter City's reserve team in the Western League in the mid-1960s. He was later a teacher in Swindon for many years.
A pupil at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Crediton, he had played for Crediton United before joining Exeter City as an amateur. A hockey and rugby player as well as a cricketer, he also played football for Bideford before studying English and history at university in Lampeter and gaining a teaching qualification at Loughborough.
Moving to Wiltshire in the early 1970s, he played football for Chippenham Town and Marlborough Town whilst teaching in schools and colleges in the Swindon area until retiring in 2000.
Remaining involved in football, he helped in the early development of Swindon Town's academy along with building links between New College Swindon and Forest Green Rovers.
John Hurst died aged 69 on 26 April 2014.
