Ian Joy, son of former Exeter City player Brian Joy, was on trial with the club in 2000. He later became a sports broadcaster in the United States having also played in the Football League with Kidderminster Harriers.
Formerly with Tranmere Rovers (where his father had played after leaving Torquay United), the eighteen-year-old left-back arrived at St James' Park towards the end of the end of the 1999/2000 season and played in the Football League Youth Alliance against Brentford in April 2000.
Born in San Diego - around the time dad Brian was with the San Diego Sockers - he grew up in Bo'ness in Scotland but made returns to America to make appearances for the United States at various levels from under-15 to under-18.
Having become a youth player with Tranmere, his trial at Exeter City was unproductive and he went on to make appearances in Scotland for Stirling Albion (two league appearances) and Montrose (25 league games) during the 2000/01 campaign. He then had two seasons in the Football League with Kidderminster Harriers making 22 league appearances.

Retiring from playing in 2011, Ian joined Fox Sports as a football commentator and later worked for CBS and the YES channel in New York.
