Daniel March, a defender, was still at school when he came to Exeter City for a trial during the Easter holidays. With a view towards him becoming a trainee, he played in a friendly against Wellington on April 14 2001. He subsequently signed for Shrewsbury Town. 

After spending three years at Shrewsbury, he joined mid-Wales club Caersws before undertaking a scholarship at Dayton University in Ohio. Later gaining a PhD from Aberystwyth, he researched and taught at the universities of Leicester and York.
