James Turley had played for York City in the Football League when he came to Devon in the summer of 2001 to have trials with Exeter City and Torquay United. He ultimately signed for Scarborough.
A trainee with York City, he played 21 league games before being released in May 2001. He then played a trial game for Exeter City against Crystal Palace on 24 July 2001 and another for Torquay United at Clyst Rovers a week later.
Returning to Yorkshire without a contract offer from either club, he went on to play for Scarborough, Stalybridge Celtic, Harrogate Town, Mossley, Witton Albion and Buxton.
