Tam played a trial match for Exeter City in a reserve game against Bristol City away from home in October 2011.

The 30 year old striker had joined City on trial from Falkirk, for whom he made 16 appearances scoring 7 times.

He started his career at Hibernian, making 119 appearances between 1997 and 2005.
During his time with Hibs ,Tam represented the Scotland national under-21's

After leaving Hibs, he moved to Dundee, where he scored 10 goals in 37 games, before joining Falkirk, for the 1st time, and then Dunfermerline where he played 26 games.

in 2009 he moved to the USA to play for Colarado Rapids, returning  after one season to play for Ayr United. the following season 2011/12.

He also played for Rochester Rhinos, Limerick, and Cairtcairn Juniors.
