Brian Stanton, who made nearly 350 league appearances for Bury, Huddersfield Town and Rochdale, had a brief period as a non-contract player for Exeter City in 1986 without making a first-team appearance.
Brian was signed by Colin Appleton in October 1986 as midfield cover on a non-contract basis. Then thirty, he lived in Bury and was playing non-league football for Morecambe at the time. Not wanting to move, he was happy to play in an emergency but was not called upon.
Hailing from Liverpool, he had played amateur football before joining New Brighton. Switching to Bury on a non-contract basis in November 1975, he signed professional forms a few months later and went on to make 83 league appearances before a transfer to Huddersfield Town in 1979. Having 209 league outings for the Terriers, he scored 45 times alongside enjoying a brief spell on loan with Wrexham.
With Morecambe during his Exeter dual-registration period, he was to return to the Football League with Rochdale where he added 49 league appearances to bring his final tally to 349 (62 goals). He then finished his playing days with the successful Colne Dynamoes outfit of the late 1980s.
