Jason Smith was briefly part of Exeter's City under-16 squad but, opting to play adult football, moved on to Tiverton at what was becoming a remarkable period in the club's history. Securing a professional deal with Coventry City, he later returned to Tivvy before having five years playing first-team football with Swansea City.
Born in the Midlands, but growing up at Braunton in North Devon, he had spent time on Spurs' books as an associated schoolboy although he was still in the final year of school when he played for City against Torquay United in the FA Youth Cup during the 1990/91 season.
With Martyn Rogers taking over at Tiverton, Jason was playing first-team at eighteen and made an appearance against Bridlington in the 1993 FA Vase final at Wembley. Attracting attention from professional clubs, he signed a two-year deal with Coventry City but did not make a first-team appearance and returned to Tiverton.
Back at Ladysmead, he was part of a formidable side that won both the Western League and the FA Vase in 1998. Showing impressive personal form he was soon back in the professional game with Swansea City where he made 142 league appearances (scoring eight times) over the next five seasons. Captain of the side, and voted player of the year during his time at the Vetch, he retired early because of injury.
