Martin was a second year trainee at Norwich City when he joined Exeter on trial in 1988, he had played for their youth team.

Keith Webb, Norwich's youth developement officer was more than happy to send the tall striker to Exeter, because of the reputation of Exeter City and their youth lead Mike Radford.
