Biographical Text

Although it has been suggested that Fred Pincott, most recently player-manager of Bideford, was involved with Exeter City in the early 1950s it is not clear in which capacity. He had post-war Football League experience with Newport County but was best known for his time as a centre-half with Bournemouth before the war.

Fred was a Bristolian who started with Victoria Albion In the Bristol and District League. Given the opportunity by Wolverhampton Wanderers, with whom he toured the South of France one close season, he subsequently joined Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic as a 21-year-old in 1934 where he made  212 first-team appearancss for the Cherries during the years leading up to the declaration of war in 1939. Always a model of consistency, he appeared in 93 consecutive games before spending the war years serving in the Devonshire Regiment and guesting for Bristol City, Chester and Bath City.

Playing in the Southern League from 1946 with Gravesend and Northfleet, he took on coaching responsibilities and duly attended an FA coaching course before accepting a player-coach role with Newport County where he made fourteen Football League appearances in the 1947/48 season.

Keen to move into management in his own right, he became player-manager of Bideford in 1948 when the North Devon club, freshly elected to the Western League, started to operate on a semi-professional basis. With Bill Mustard, ex-Exeter City, one of Bideford's most influential players Fred remained at the helm for two or three years.

There is then mention of Fred falling ill, making a recovery and appearing for Exminster club St Martin's at some stage. As for any Exeter City link, it is to be imagined that he was known to the club. With Fred celebrating his 38th birthday in March 1951 it remains feasible that this could either have been in a temporary coaching role or as a back-up player for the reserves.
