Costello, Julie

Julie had started her football career in 1971 at Bath Ladies. After Bath City she played for Devizes Moonrakers, Compton Wanderers and Warminster before joining Exeter Ladies in 1978. Julie was still playing for Exeter in the 1982/83 season.

Julie was an adaptable player who played in all outfield positions, setting up many a goal scoring opportunity for the forwards and scoring exceptional goals from free-kicks.
She scored a "spectacular" goal against Warminster in the Pat Sowden Cup Final. Julie was described as "one of the hardest working players, always fighting hard to win possession in the middle of the park." She was respected off the field for her tactical knowledge of the game. In the 1982/83 season she was vice-captain. Julie played in a South West representative side against England Ladies. She also had "Western league honours."

The following was from a programme article in 82/83.

Honours: Vice Captain, played in a South West representative side v England and Western League honours.
Hobbies: Darts, Pool and Tankard.
Julie began her career in competetive football 11 years ago playing for Bath Ladies, Devizes Moonrakers, Compton Wanderers and Warminster before joining Exeter Ladies in 1978. Julie is a very adaptable player and has played in every position except goalkeeper. She sets up many goal-scoring chances for the front runners and she herself has scored exceptional goals from free-kicks. The one remembered most is, I'm sure, the one Julie scored against Warminster in the Pat Sowden Cup Final. Being one of the hardest working players she fights hard to win possession for us in the middle of the park and she is respected for her depth of knowledge of the tacti cal side of the game.
Surprisingly Julie has never won a club award but I'm sure she would if there was one for dedication and effort.

Julie made her 100th appearance on the 23rd January 1983 against Barry, away in a League Cup game

Julie was still playing for Exeter L.F.C. in 1986-87 and in the following season, on the 20th September 1987 made her 200th appearance in a WFA 1st Round Cup tie against Truro.

In 2022 Julie replying to Jules Nicholson on Facebook.

"Thank you Ju. We played so well on that right hand side with Jackie Tancock too! Special times & special memories."
