Shelley's first team was the Golden Girls, she also played for Kingsteignton,  before joining Exeter.

A left sided midfielder, she was runner up to the player of the year in 1977/78.

Although a midfielder, Shelley also played as a defender for Exeter in 1982/83.
Not a prolific goal scorer, she did score one of "the best goals seen at Wyvern, scoring with a 30 yard screamer that any professional would be proud of."

Shelley was still playing for Exeter in 1983/84. And the following was from a programme in that season 

"Shelley started her football career with the Golden Girls, I am not sure if this was a football team or not as I didn't do the interview, but we will say it is O.K. Shell has also played for Kingsteignton, but her main team has always been Exeter Ladies. Shelley is not necessarily a strong player but has the skill and ability to use a first time ball, and create a break through the defence with just a simple pass, but good enough to give the forwards a goal scoring chance. Shelley is the lover of 5-aside football or a hard short surface, and this is where Shelley thrives. A fine on-touch player and accurate passer have made her a cpnsistent member of the team. Although scoring is not Shelleys strongest point she has probably scored one of the finest goals seen at Wyver A 30 yard shot which depped into the top of the goal, and any proffessional would have been proud of it. Shell's dislikes in football are heading the ball, and the number 6 shirt, But as she says it's better than 12 or 13."
