Biographical Text
Brian Godfrey, Exeter City's manager between 1979 and 1983, enjoyed a fleeting playing career for the Grecians when he turned out for the club's 'A' side in the East Devon Senior Cup against Budleigh Salterton and Crediton United towards the end of 1981/82 season.
Then forty-two, and playing alongside coach Malcolm Musgrove (ex-West Ham United), it was more than three years since Brian had last played for Bath City and seven years since the end of his Football League career with Newport County.
Starting as a youngster with Everton in 1958, he played one league game before moving on to appear for Scunthorpe United, Preston North End, Aston Villa, Bristol Rovers and Newport County in a 552-game, 128-goal Football League career.
Winning three full caps for Wales in his mid-twenties, when with Preston, he also appeared for Portland Timbers in the United States prior to becoming player-manager of Bath City ahead of his arrival at St James' Park in January 1979 where he was to guide the Grecians to an 8th place finish in the old Third Division and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Brian died in Cyprus in 2010.
