Biographical Text
Charlie Budden was a professional cricketer with Exeter CC and Devon who briefly appeared for Exeter City reserves in 1905/06.
One of a large group of potential new players, Charlie turned up for City's pre-season trials in the summer of 1905 together with his fellow Devon cricket professional Billy Light. Both had previously played first-class cricket for Hampshire - where Billy had been the more successful of the two - and Charlie was still relatively new to the area having previously been employed as a professional with the Strathmore club in Forfar.
Little is known of Charlie's time with City although we know he appeared for the reserves against Torquay United on 30 September 1905 when the Devon and Exeter Gazette's reporter considered him to be a superior footballer than Light. But Billy made the greater impact on local cricket as Charlie's time with Devon does not appear to have extended beyond 1906 whereas Billy Light was part of the Devon cricket scene until 1928.
Eventually settling once again in Hampshire, Charlie died in Winchester in 1969 aged ninety.
