George Ray, a defender from Tranmere Rovers, featured in the first-half of City’s 2021/22 promotion-winning season. He left for Leyton Orient on loan in the January and later joined Barrow on a permanent basis.
George started at the Crewe Alexandra academy in 2004 and went onto sign professional forms in 2011. He was on loan at Leek Town in 2011-12 and eventually made his Crewe debut in the Football League Trophy at Wembley Stadium on 7 April 2013; the first player to make his professional debut in a Wembley cup final. George was called up to the Wales under-21 side in March 2013.
At the end of the 2018-19 season, after 137 appearances and five goals, he left Crewe to sign for Tranmere Rovers where he played 23 games scoring one league goal before moving to Exeter in June 2021.
Making his debut for the Grecians in the opening game of the season on 7 August 2021 against Bradford City, George scored his first goal for Exeter on 27 November 2021 at Rochdale and immediately followed up with another against Bradford City in the FA Cup. Then, after making nineteen league appearances, George joined Leyton Orient on loan until the end of the season before being released in May 2022 to join Barrow. Remaining at Holker Street for two seasons, he played around eighty times ahead of leaving the club in May 2024 in order to sign for Morecambe in time for the following season.
