Biographical Text

Playing around half of Exeter City’s games in 1936/37, Fred Smith joined the club from Darlington and later played for Gillingham. Although his stay at St James' Park was brief, he played for the Grecians in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Fred was playing for Hurst when he was signed by Stockport County in 1931 where he played 17 league games before moving to Ashton National in 1932. Rejoining Hurst in 1933, he moved to Darlington in 1935.

Arriving at Exeter City in the summer of 1936 he went straight into the Grecians’ side for the opening day of the season fixture at Notts County on 29 August 1936. Appearing in  24 league games (4 goals) - mainly during the second-half of the season - he was also part of the City side that beat Leicester City 3-1 in the 4th round of the FA Cup on 30 January 1937 and lost 5-3 at Preston in the 5th round (when he scored one of the goals).

Fred left St James' Park at the end of the campaign to sign for Gillingham in 1937 for whom he appeared in 15 league matches scoring twice.

I think after Gillingham he came to Yeovil in 1938/39 season. Played 16 matches scoring once.

I think that's my father, if it is he went on to work for the electricity board in Yeovil as a linesman. After being forced to retire from football because of a knee injury.
