Experienced former Rotherham United forward Shaun Goodwin appeared for Exeter City in a friendly against Portsmouth in July 1998. With nothing coming from his time at St James' Park, he later made a small number of appearances for Doncaster Rovers.
Joining Rotherham United, his hometown club, on leaving school in 1985 Shaun turned professional two years later and went on to make 280 league appearances for the Millers scoring on 39 occasions. He was a member of the side that won the Football League Trophy in 1996. Released at the age of twenty-nine in 1998, he endeavoured to remain in the Football League by seeking a contract with Exeter City.
Arriving at St James' Park for a pre-season trial, he soon returned to South Yorkshire to sign for the recently-relegated Doncaster Rovers now playing in the Football Conference. Further moves followed to Altrincham and Gainsborough Trinity as did a spell in management with Maltby Main.
