Biographical Text
Joe Auguste had a short spell with Exeter City during the 1983/84 season having arrived from Hounslow. After failing to make an impact at St James’ Park he returned to his former club and never played professional football again.
Joe began as a youth player with Blackpool and then played briefly for Chelmsford City ahead of dropping out of senior football for three years. Picking up the threads in his early twenties he joined Hounslow, moved on to Hayes and returned to Hounslow.
In September 1983, Joe signed for Exeter City on a non-contract basis and made his debut in a 2–0 loss against Bristol Rovers on 17 September 1983. At the time of his arrival he was described as having ‘clever ball control and a somewhat individualistic style of play’. With City struggling under the guidance of Gerry Francis it was believed that the manager’s brother, who was playing for Hounslow at the time, had recommended his team mate. Indeed Joe, arriving from a modest non-league club at the age of twenty-seven, reflected the tone of City’s disastrous 1983-84 season when players arrived and left on a regular basis.
In the end Joe's stay with the Grecians was to be brief as, after his debut in September, he made a total of seven league starts - with another three from the bench - prior to making his final appearance against Sheffield United on 12 November 1983 before rejoining Hounslow.
